Writing and editing a post
Wordpress enjoys a well deserved reputation for ease of use. If you are at home with software such as Microsoft Word or even Hotmail, then you will encounter few difficulties with Wordpress.
This article covers the basics of writing and editing posts, however it is equally applicable to writing and editing pages (more about the difference between pages and posts can be found by clicking here).
First of all you will need to log in to the dashboard. On the left of the screen you will see the main menu: we are interested in two items in particular, Posts, which is near the top, and Pages, slightly further down.
When you click on either of these options the menu will expand to reveal further sub-options, including Edit and Add new. Normally, in fact, the posts section will already be expanded. It’s likely that a number of posts (and pages) will already exist, unless you have chosen to work with an absolutely fresh installation, in which case a default post called something like “Hello world!” will be the only post listed.
Writing a new post is very similar to editing an existing post, the only notable difference is how you get there. To edit, you can simply click on the name of the post, or if you let the mouse hover over the name, some additional options (including edit) will appear below it.
To write a new post simply select Add New from the menu, underneath Posts (or Pages, if you want to add a new page rather than a post). First of all, let’s try writing a new post. Click on the Add New option underneath Posts on the menu.
You should see something similar to the screenshot on the right. As you can see, you are essentially provided with a stripped down word processor, with all the basic formatting buttons including bold, italic, underline and centre.
Be sure to give your post a title (in the upper box, just below where it says Add New Post), and then type out your post. As you go along you might want to look at how the post will appear once published. To do this, simply click on the Preview button, which you will find in the top right of the screen (within the Publish options box).
Once you have finished, all you need to do is click on the Publish button – and that’s it, your new post is available for all to see. You may also want to learn about adding photos to pages and posts – and remember, you don’t need to be afraid of making mistakes, as you can always restore a previous edit.
