The difference between pages and posts
A website served up by Wordpress offers its readers two main types of content – pages and posts. Both can contain a mix of text, images, forms and other media: so what’s the difference?
Pages are typically used for information that rarely changes, such as an About Us page or a Find Us page. The details within such a page might change occasionally, but the main thrust remains the same.
A post, on the other hand, is intended to convey the latest news, thoughts or ideas of the website author. Consequently, these are typically delivered in reverse chronological order and, by default, allow visitors to leave comments.
At Staggerforth when we build websites on top of Wordpress we typically harness this system of pages and posts so that posts are used to provide a stream of ‘latest news’ – we might for instance show the most recent four or five posts on the home page, and every time a new post is added it will take precedence, with the oldest of the posts automatically disappearing from the home page to make room.

Inherent flexibility
Wordpress is arguably the best all-round web publishing platform currently available. By far the most popular use of Wordpress is as a blogging engine, and much of the distinction between pages and posts and how to use them stems from its use in this way.
However, creative use of the platform means that your website may use these features in different ways. If we build a website for an estate agency, for example, we might have reserved the posts for conveying information about properties for sale. If this is the case then we will of course have advised you appropriately.
If you have not already done so, why not take a look at our article on editing posts and pages.
