Logging in to Wordpress for the first time

Learning about WordpressSo your new Wordpress-powered website is up and running, and now you want to login and take a look under the hood – perhaps change the wording on one of the pages, or create a completely new page.

The first thing you need to do is login. Normally with a Wordpress site you can do this by typing your website address followed by /wp-admin/. So if your website is found at www.puppetshop.biz then you need to point your browser at www.puppetshop.biz/wp-admin/.

The Wordpress login screen
You should be presented with a screen not dissimilar to the one depicted above, although it may have been rebranded slightly.

Type in your username and password as supplied. If you want you can tick the remember me box – this means you won’t have to enter your username and password every time you log in to the admin pages, however you should only do this if you trust everyone with access to your PC.

Screenshot of the Wordpress dashboard
You should now see something not unlike the above screenshot. This is known as the Dashboard, and it is your gateway to editing, deleting and adding new pages and other content to your website.

Depending on what extensions (commonly referred to as plugins) are installed, you may also be able to look at visitor statistics, control contact forms and much more besides. Why not take a look at our article on writing and editing posts and pages.
